Mr. Afasi Komla, the leader of End Modern Slavery (EMS) team has disclosed that, on March 10th, 2021, Suhum Circuit Court presided over by Justice Effia Addison sentenced the Imam named Ishmaila Salam to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour due to efforts made by his team to make sure justice is served to the 12-year-old girl whom he allegedly defiled.
The incident occurred at Mameng, a village at Kwahyia in the Eastern Region.
According to report, the complaint one Mr. Kwame Abu, who is the father of the 12-year-old girl accused the Imam who is a Nigerian and an Islamic preacher and a teacher at Masjid Ali Dawood Abu Zahriya.
Kwahyia is a village near Suhum in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
The father of the victim told that somewhere in 2020, his daughter started attending Arabic studies at the mosque where the Imam presides.
The victim’s mother said she had warned the Imam after observing some ungodly play between her daughter and the accused person.
In somewhere early March this year, the victim revealed to the End Modern Slavery (EMS) that, the accused person had been having sexual intercourse with her in the said mosque after their studies.
The accused person admitted sleeping with the victim and pleaded with the victim’s family on March 3, 2021.
The EMS together with the family of the victim filed a case against the accused and after medical confirmation from a doctor, the Court charged the accused person with 10-year prison sentence.
